Have you ever opened the bathroom door and felt the need to hold your breath? As you may already know, a bad bathroom smell can be a total mood killer. Let’s face it, who wants to have a soothing bath in a stinky space? We believe that by using scent, your bathing space can be a place in which to relax, and be refreshed by. Fragrance is just as important as how a bathroom looks.

Read on to discover 5 simple odour solutions that you can incorporate into a busy family space, and transform your bathroom into one you can finally enjoy.

1.  Old habits die hard

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the most overlooked. If a soggy pile of bacteria-laden clothes strewn in the corner of your bathroom rings a bell, add a laundry basket to your space and banish the habit for good. Even the littlest one will have no excuse.

2. Keep it fresh

Potted plants aren’t only pretty; they’re also natural air purifiers. Some of the best ones to use are types of dracaena, easy to maintain spider plants and peace lilies. Pick a multi-tasking marvel like aloe vera, and find the perfect skin soothing solution to boot!

3.  Deodorise your drains

For a cheap and easy solution, add a cup of bicarbonate of soda to a bad-smelling drain and leave it in place for a couple of hours. After two hours, add a cup of white vinegar, wait five minutes and rinse with hot water. The baking soda gets rid of odours, and the bubbling action caused by the addition of vinegar loosens any smelly gunk, so that it easily rinses away. If you need a quick fix, put some peppermint oil down the plughole. It not only helps to locate any blockages, but will stop smells too.

4. Light it

Supposedly, lighting a match after *ahem*, using the toilet, is the trick to getting rid of unwanted smells. However, it’s just a tad impractical. Regular use of a scented candle can eliminate odours, as well as leave a lovely lingering fragrance. Choose citrus-oil heavy scents which have been proven to work against smells. If you want to try something different, opt for incense instead.

5. A natural solution

Try this recipe for a chemical-free air freshener. Mix 2 cups water, 1 tbsp white vinegar, 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda and 10 drops of essential oil, such as peppermint, lemon or lavender. Combine and put into a spray bottle to leave in the bathroom for everyone to use. Spray it into the toilet before use, so that the essential oils can to create a “barrier” and stop smells before they start.
